Health advice customized for people traveling abroad for work
At our travel health clinics in San Diego, we offer customized advice to people in various fields of business. For instance, you may be visiting markets or agricultural regions; or you may be traveling as an aid worker. Our team of travel health experts can advise on the risks and harms that you may be exposed to during your business trip abroad.
We will provide advice tailored to your industry. For example, if a person works in forestry, they may need additional advice on bug and insect bite avoidance. We can also provide vaccination against diseases that you may be exposed to working in remote areas, such as rabies, Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis.
Our San Diego travel health centers have long opening hours so you can get appointments before and after work.
Bespoke travel health advice for leisure travelers
Our travel health advice can be tailored to your trip abroad. We understand the health needs of every type of traveler, whether you are going on a cruise or visiting friends and family. We know that every trip means different vaccines. For example, if you are visiting a remote area for trekking, you may need to get a rabies shot. Or if you are keen to experience the best street food your destination has to offer, you may value the protection of the hepatitis A vaccine. So we tailor our advice to your trip abroad.
When should I make an appointment for my travel shots?
You should book your appointment at one of our San Diego travel health clinics six to eight weeks prior to your departure.
This allows for you to have enough time to get your required vaccines. Some vaccines are given in multiple spaced doses. And other vaccines are only fully effective after a week or ten days. In particular, the yellow fever vaccination has to be given at least ten days before your trip.
To book a travel health appointment with Global Travel Clinics San Diego, please phone our office or contact us online by selecting your location and finding your nearest travel shots clinic in San Diego. You can then find the day and time that best suits you.
If you are traveling with other people, be sure to book each person a separate appointment.
Are urgent appointments possible for travel vaccines?
We recognize instances where people may have to make trips that were not planned ahead – for example, you may be traveling for a work emergency and need to get vaccinated. Or you could be traveling during a family crisis and want to get travel shots for a trip in the next few days. Or perhaps a cancellation means an opportunity for travel came up that you just can’t miss. Whatever your reason for last-minute travel, Global Travel Clinics San Diego can help you.
Our nurses can work out accelerated vaccine schedules and get you an emergency travel vaccine appointment on the same day.
Our travel health advisers can give you tips to support your travel vaccines too. So you can still get travel vaccines if you’re traveling very soon.
What does a travel health appointment look like?
Your first travel health appointment with Global Travel Clinics will last for thirty minutes. You will meet with one of our first-class travel health professionals.
We encourage you to arrive at our office five to ten minutes before your appointment – but we aim to have no waiting time at our travel clinics, and at your appointment time, your travel health adviser will lead you straight to your appointment.
During your travel health appointment, the travel health adviser will discuss your trip’s details with you. They will want to know about:
- where you are going
- when you are going
- what you will be doing
- any health issues that you have
- any previous travel vaccines that you may have had
You should be honest and upfront about the activities you expect to take part in on your trip, and all the places that you will visit. All client records are confidential, and we take your privacy very seriously.
The travel health nurse will use this information to work out which risks and harms it is likely that you will be exposed to. They will then recommend travel shots and vaccinations, and give advice that will help you to avoid exposure to disease-causing organisms.
We keep a full stock of common travel vaccines. In many cases, we can give shots on the same day as the appointment. But some vaccines are given in multiple doses, so we may call you again for follow up travel shots if required.
How much do travel vaccines cost?
We believe in providing a quality travel health service that is also cost effective. That’s why we at Global Travel Clinics provide customized vaccination courses that keep your costs down.
And our travel health experts will always tell you about ways to keep your costs down – for example, some vaccines are available in a combined shot, which is cheaper than getting the vaccines individually. And some vaccines will protect you for many years, which means you will not need to get vaccinated again for your next trip abroad.
The cost of a full set of travel vaccines varies depending on what shots you are getting. But we can assure you that there will be no hidden costs, and we are honest and transparent about our charges.

Can I get protection against malaria?
Malaria is a common disease in tropical areas. It is contracted by being bitten by an infected female mosquito that is carrying a parasite.
The symptoms of malaria take around two weeks to appear. Malaria can be fatal; and it is a serious illness that has the potential to ruin your holiday. It’s likely you’ll have to take time off work or school to recover from malaria.
Our travel health pharmacists can prescribe malaria tablets and tell you when to start and stop the antimalarial course. It can be tricky to know when to start and finish your malaria pills to ensure best protection, but we can guide you.
Antimalarials provide good protection; but you will need to avoid mosquito bites as well. Our travel health advisers can tell you how to do this.
Which vaccines should I get if I’m driving to Mexico?
The vaccines you need if you’re crossing the border into Mexico will depend on the activities you have planned, and the time of year.
It’s best to get tailored expert advice for your trip to Mexico. So we recommend making an appointment with Global Travel Clinics in San Diego.
Do I need travel vaccines when I’m visiting the US?
If you’ve just arrived in the US, Global Travel Clinics San Diego is the perfect place to get any catch-up shots you may need.
Are the yellow fever and meningococcal meningitis vaccines mandatory for my trip abroad?
Yellow fever is a viral infection that is caused by being bitten by an infected mosquito. Yellow fever is one of the few vaccinations that many countries require you to have if you want to travel there. Trying to enter some countries without a yellow fever certificate could get you turned away at the border.
So you may need a certificate which shows proof of immunity to yellow fever for your foreign travel. At your travel health appointment in our San Diego clinic, we will tell you if you need a yellow fever certificate for your trip abroad.
You need to get yellow fever vaccination around ten days before your trip to ensure you are fully protected from the moment you arrive at your destination. We will issue this certificate to you after you have had your yellow fever vaccination.
Not all travel clinics provide yellow fever vaccinations but Global Travel do and we are on the U.S. Yellow Fever Vaccination Center Registry, which is maintained by the Centers for Disease Controls.
We also provide vaccination for meningococcal meningitis with a certificate. This may be mandatory for travel to places like Saudi Arabia.
